Summary: ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, previously known as Humane Alliance, focuses on the training of high-quality, high-volume, and low-cost companion animal sterilization. Starting in 1994 as a small spay/neuter clinic in Asheville, NC, Humane Alliance grew into a nonprofit organization nationally recognized for fostering a mentoring culture across the country to successfully replicate its tried and tested clinic model. In 2015 Humane Alliance merged with the ASPCA, thus allowing us even greater exposure and resources to expand our programs. The Director, Medical Support Staff - Building A is responsible for a broad range of operational activities to help ensure that the medical support team runs effectively, group-wide issues are raised and appropriately addressed, and that each staff member has the level of support to be high performing. S/he is responsible for working with the Lead RVT, Clinic Mentorship Programs and Lead Veterinary Assistant to schedule support staff and ensure coverage for all clinic and training program medical suites. This position reports to the Medical Director, Building A. Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Team Management: (35%) Direct, schedule, and supervise a large staff in a busy environment Observe team and clinic performance and bring any ideas for improvements to the Medical Director, Building A for consideration Responsible for all aspects of general (non-Clinic Mentorship Programs (CMP)) medical support staff management, including education and development; scheduling; policy enforcement; employee relations; terminations; communications; and operations on the floor Document and communicate to appropriate management valid concerns, proposed solutions, and ideas regarding employee issues Participate in the hiring process for all general medical support staff for Building A in conjunction with the direct supervisor for the open role On-board designated persons in all aspects of patient care and efficient and safe clinic practices internally and externally Complete annual performance reviews and goals for direct reports Communicate effectively and professionally with the public, trainees, and all ASPCA staff members Manage 4 - 6 direct reports including RVTs, VTs, Lead Veterinary Assistant and Kennel Attendant Communicate with all program leadership to coordinate daily number strategies between campus programs Serve on the ASNA Leadership Team to assist with operations and strategic direction of the campus Follow all written and verbal departmental standard operating procedures Provide coverage for other positions as needed, including Veterinary Assistants, Registered Veterinary Technicians, and Kennel Attendants Effectively supervise work on the floor and proactively address any issues to ensure operations run smoothly Animal Procedures & Care: (45%) Oversee all training for Building A general medical support staff in all aspects of patient care and efficient and safe clinic practices and utilize Lead Instructor for training resources as needed Provide training in patient care and safe clinic practices to partner clinics and other ASPCA departments Travel when necessary to provide training Work with Lead RVT, CMP to ensure all Building A general medical support staff are familiar with and observant of all Spay/Neuter Alliance policies, procedures, and protocols as they are updated and amended Ensure all animals receive optimal care, including routine medical care, in strict adherence to Spay/Neuter Alliance policies and procedures Work with supervisor and other training leaders to evaluate and improve program efficiency to ensure the highest level of care to patients Oversee daily kennel inspections Distribute animals to surgical teams Assist Veterinarians and medical support staff in medical, surgical, and anesthetic activities which include, but are not limited to, administration of medications; surgical preparation of patients; induction; intubation; and patient monitoring during anesthesia and recovery Glove-in sterilely and assist Veterinarians with surgery when appropriate Communicate with clients and assist with rechecks as needed and as directed by a Veterinarian Safety & Compliance: (20%) Handle and track controlled substances for large volumes of surgical patients In partnership with the Medical Director, Building A, ensure compliance with DEA regulations and Spay/Neuter Alliance protocols for controlled substance standard operating procedures Oversee and ensure records and clinic logs are complete, correct, and properly updated Provide back up for inventory processes in the absence of Lead Veterinary Assistant Complete weekly evaluations of disease control measures/breaches of protocol and advise supervisor of any infractions or concerns Ensure training and compliance for all medical support staff in the proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures in all medical areas of Building A Ensure cleanliness of Building A Must exemplify the ASPCA's Core Values: Has Commitment and dedication to improving the lives of animals Demonstrates Ownership and feels responsible for outcomes Believes in Team- that we are stronger together Seeks to Elevate others and reimagine what is possible Focuses on Impact, specifically making change for animals Additional Information: Bachelor's Degree preferred; Associate's Degree required Registered Veterinary Technician License required CVPM preferred Three or more years of management experience in a veterinary clinic, veterinary hospital, animal shelter, or control facility Experience in training staff at all levels Experience in analyzing and reprioritizing assignments for staff members to ensure excellent medical care Position requires flexibility and may require occasional overtime during off-hours, weekends, evening hours and possible holiday support Able to occasionally work in physically challenging conditions and be able to wear appropriate protective gear, including a protective mask. Potential environmental factors include: Exposure to chemical and biological hazards, such as feces and blood; Exposure to sharp objects; Working in environments that include loud noises; and Working in environments that may have uneven, wet, slippery, greasy, oily, dirty surfaces or strong odors, and exposure to fumes, gases and dust Must provide a valid driver's license upon hireand pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history Position requires travel (up to 20%) Qualifications: Ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts clearly in verbal and written form, Displays courage and determination in the face of challenges and inspires others to do the same, Forms authentic, trusting relationships which enhance individual and team performance, Knowledge of Animal Handling, Must be able to bend, kneel, repetitively use hands and work standing for 10 or more hours, Must be able to handle multiple tasks at once and deal with high levels of stress in an environment of constantly changing priorities, Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds repeatedly throughout the day and up to 50 lbs with help (large oxygen tanks, large animal handling), Must have strong medical, surgical and nursing skills and know basic veterinary concepts, Proficient in safe animal handling and restraining techniques, Seeks to understand different perspectives and willingly comes together with others to achieve collective goals Language: English (Required) Education and Work Experience: Associates (Required), Bachelors To Apply Please visit aspca.org/careers to learn more and to submit your application for this position.
